PORTLAND 2012 Tour

SPRING MARCHING BAND 2012
Summer Tour to PORTLAND – June 7th to 10th, 2012

Rather than trying to find a weekend for our out-of-state competition in that schedule (which I find unlikely as it’d either have to be September 10 or November), we’re going to make our competition trip in JUNE 2012 instead… we’ve been invited to perform in the PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL PARADE on Saturday, June 9th! We’ve also talked with the band directors at both Wendell and Minico High Schools about their students joining us for this trip – we would rehearse in the same manner as the “Magic Valley Marching Band” and our spring marching program has the past five years (that information is also included here). We will still march the Hagerman and Twin Falls parades as warm-ups for the Rose Parade in 2012.

Here’s the schedule for the Portland Rose Parade trip:
Ø Thursday, June 7th)                 Travel to the Portland area – staying on a gym floor each night.
Ø Friday, June 8th)            Events in Portland – concert performance, sight-seeing.
Ø Saturday, June 9th)                  Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade (televised).
Ø Sunday, June 10th)                   Travel back to Jerome.
The cost of the trip would be food (current estimate would be $60), bussing (also estimated at $60), plus the entry fee and event costs (less than that – say $25), so at the moment we’re looking at $145 per person. This would NOT be charged as part of the regular Ambush season fee, which will only be $35 this fall, significantly less this fall than the normal $60.
This trip would be parade and stand-still performances only, so if we didn’t have every member from the fall season on the trip we could still perform. In fact, the numbers would definitely change with the addition of students from other schools, and we will consider adding the incoming eighth grade (the class of 2016) even if they hadn’t marched with the Ambush in the fall.
Participation and financial deadlines:
    • One-half of the total cost of the trip (currently $72.50) will be due by Thursday, April 26th.
    • The remainder of the total cost of the trip will be due no later than Friday, June 1st.

Ø The Jerome HS “Ambush of Tigers” Spring Marching Band is open to any Jerome students in grades 8-12, as well as seventh graders intending to march with the Ambush in eighth grade. This is a great way to get some introductory experience into the world of marching band! It’s also open to students from any other Magic Valley high school, as well as any college or adult players who wish to participate.
Ø The Jerome HS “Ambush of Tigers” spring marching band is proudly sponsored by the MAGIC VALLEY MALL.
Ø We will rehearse on four consecutive Saturday mornings at Jerome High School.
o    The dates are April 29th, May 5th, 12th, and 19th. We will insist that you attend all four rehearsals to participate in the scheduled performances, except for remarkable and unavoidable circumstances.
o    These practices will run from 8 to 10:30 a.m., presuming members arrive on time. Please wear clothes at each rehearsal that you can move and march in. Good socks and comfortable shoes are a must. Dress to be outside each of those mornings, regardless of weather.
o    Additional rehearsals will take place during first period classes at JHS during third term, especially May.
o    Jerome HS is at 104 N. Tiger Drive, one mile east of Lincoln on Main (four miles west of 93).
Ø UNIFORM will be our regular Ambush uniforms this year.
Ø Our first performance, on Saturday, May 26th, will be the Hagerman Fossil Days Parade. Right now our expected meet time at Jerome HS will be 9 a.m., with an 11 a.m. step-off time, but we’ll have more details as it approaches. There’s also the possibility we will be joined by Hagerman HS’s band as well.
Ø Tentatively on May 29th, we’ve once again been asked to be the band for the Shriner’s All-Star Football Game at Twin Falls HS. The bus will leave at 4:30 p.m., and we’ll play for both the 8-man game and the 11-man game to follow; we should be done at 10:30 and back to JHS at 11 p.m. AMBUSH T-Shirt and blue jeans will be the uniform for this.
Ø The Western Days parade is on Saturday, June 2nd. The rough schedule is as follows:
o    We’ll meet at the corner of Blue Lakes and Falls Avenue in Twin Falls at 8:30 a.m.
o    The parade starts at 10 a.m., and will move down Blue Lakes, down Shoshone, and end just past the City Park.
o    At the end of the parade in the City Park downtown on Shoshone, we will perform a stand-still concert in the bandshell after the end of the parade. (There will be food and activities in the park for us in the meantime.) We will be done at about 1:30 p.m. or so, although times are flexible.
Ø Marching experience is a plus but not a requirement. One of the purposes of the Magic Valley Marching Band was always to provide a great marching band experience for students without a competitive marching band in their schools, and we will continue that philosophy with our spring marching program. We will train any willing and eager students who wish to participate how to march. There will be marching drum-line equipment provided for experienced percussionists, and flags and poles for all prospective color guard members (again, we will train you if your experience is limited).
Ø CONTACT Mr. Gordon P. Smith (gordon.smith@jeromeschools.org) at JHS for more details.
