Band Directors

GREG BERGMAN
Mr. Bergman is in his eighteenth year of teaching and his eleventh year at NHS, where he teaches Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble II, Marching Band, and Pep Band. Before coming to Newton, he served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Wichita East High School, and had a graduate teaching assistantship at Wichita State University, where he directed the WSU Shocker Basketball Band and assisted with the teaching of instrumental conducting and music education courses. Prior to this Mr. Bergman held a position with the Stanton Community Schools in Nebraska. In 1999 he received the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association Outstanding Young Band Director Award, and was named "Band Director of the Year" by the Mid-State Activities Conference. As a trumpet player, Mr. Bergman has performed with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Metropolitan Ballet Orchestra, Wichita State University Faculty Brass Quintet, Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra, and other professional ensembles in Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska. Mr. Bergman has been published in the Journal of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and currently serves on the executive board of the Kansas Bandmasters Association.

KEITH WOOLERY
Mr. Woolery is currently in his twenty-eighth year of directing bands for the Newton School District, where he teaches Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble I, and Marching Band. He is also an adjunct instructor for Hutchinson Community College and the director of the Boeing Company Jazz Band. Mr. Woolery is a graduate of Newton High School, Hutchinson Community College, and Emporia State University. He studied composition and arranging at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. After graduating from college, he spent ten years on the road, leading and performing in his own band, in thirty-nine states and several Canadian Provinces. He is a very active percussionist and drummer, having played with many well-known artists including Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Stan Kenton, Eddie Daniels, Clark Terry and many others. Most recently, he played with the Drifters, Coasters and the Marvelettes. Mr. Woolery has served on the Board of Directors of KMEA and is a past president of the Kansas Unit of the International Association of Jazz Educators. He has been the jazz chairperson for the KMEA South-Central District three times, and has twice served as the State KMEA jazz chairperson.
